Based on the matching data of urban statistics and night-time lighting from 1995 to 2013，this paper studies the polarization of urban scale in China. The results confirm that there does exist the phenomenon of “rapid expansion of large scale cities and slow expansion of small scale cities”. Further analysis shows that the fundamental reason for the urban scale polarization is the difference in the extensive expansion incentive provided by economic growth competition to cities of different scale. Specifically，because the coordination effect of urban scale coordination strategy is smaller than the polarization effect of economic growth competition，it is difficult to coordinate the urban scale. Economic growth competition has a significant effect on urban scale， which is mainly reflected through extensive expansion of the city；the economic growth competition provides greater extensive expansion incentive to large cities than to small cities. Both robustness analysis and IV estimation support the above conclusions.
