The industrialization of FinTech has a significant and far-reaching impact on banking institutions and the competition pattern of the whole banking industry. Based on the economic and financial panel data of 31 provincial-level administrative regions in 2011—2016, this paper empirically studies the impact of FinTech on regional banking competition by constructing the spatial econometric model. The results show that FinTech has a significant impact on regional banking competition, including spatial and geographic effects and industrial competition effects. The spatial geographic effect is mainly manifested in the significant spatial dependence effect. The industrial competition effect mainly comes from the two channels of “market crowding out” and “technology spillover”. The conclusions have great significance for how to use FinTech to promote regional banking competition, and stimulate commercial banks to better serve the real economy.
